Washington Jan 22 the houses began debate on the steel bill. Democratic leaders predicted passage before adjournment. When General Debate was offered Republicans demanded a record vote which was taken. The measure heads to the senate finance committee Monday for hearings.

Washington January 27 Representative Henry of Texas, chairman of the House rules committee, urged a careful money trust investigation. He warned against sensational or evasive inquiry and called for a deliberate, effective inquiry in the public interest. He noted potential Democratic opposition and insisted trustees expose their positions openly.
Philadelphia January 27. News reports indicate that daily newspapers in the United States leveled off in growth, with 2,472 titles a year ago and 13 fewer in the 1912 annual list. Mortality outpaces birth due to suspensions and consolidations, especially in New England New York and the Midwest. Weekly and semi weekly titles also shrink. The 1912 directory covers 24,345 newspapers and periodicals, detailing circulation and population across 11,000 towns.
In Seattle on January 27 the defense began presenting its case in the trial of Mrs Linda Haszard charged with starving to death Miss Claire Williamson a wealthy Hooghly woman and former patient at Hazard Sanitarium State experts testified treatment caused Williamson’s death. Osborn hints major Republicans Taft and La Follette might retire to back Roosevelt, while Taft departs Washington for a western trip to New York and three Ohio cities ending in Akron.

A serious fire broke out at Pratt Otterworks of Standard Oil in Williamsburg Brooklyn this morning. An explosion started the blaze, leaving a ten gallon oil can in the filling room where 30 men and 22 women were preparing for shipment. Firemen confined the flames to the filling department in a brick structure.

Olga Elizabeth Olsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christson, 320 Elma street, died last evening of paralysis. She would have turned 23 on January fifth.
