London January 26 At Life Guards barracks Regent's Park the prince of Wales inspected the first int of yeomanry bound for South Africa tomorrow. Notables including Lady Essex Lord Rothschild and Lord and Lady Lonsdale attended. The prince in undress staff general uniform examined every man and equipment, as khaki and putties and upturned cowboy hats marked the unit. He praised the volunteers and pledged interest in their welfare while urging duty to the sovereign. Cheers followed as hats were raised.
Milwaukee Tea company local agent F. H. Crossman was robbed of about $5 and a gold watch chain near the Wooden Ware lumber yard in Menasha Wisconsin. Two masked men assaulted him as he returned from Neenah at about 9 30 p m, twisting his vest, tearing his pocketbook and taking cash all but 1 35, the bandits fled toward Neenah after firing a shot in pursuit. Crossman alarmed the Landerau hotel and police were notified. one suspect may be known to Crossman. Separately Neenah engineer Peter Larson suffered a broken arm after being thrown from an ice boat vent when the tiller caught a crack.
Dispatch from Pretoria reports a heavy bombardment of Kimberley by Transvaal forces. The garrison’s new gun reached four miles before collapsing after several shots. A 200-strong lancer sortie from Ladysmith faced heavy cannon and rifle fire from forts opposite the Pretoria laager. the British retired with no evident loss, one Boer wounded. The bombardment persisted into the morning.

The court’s finances were strong with annual dues reduced to two dollars and initiation fees abolished. The surplus now stands at nearly four million dollars invested for future security.
