Benjamin P. Bower, a 62 year old Denver bakery manager, was freed after a five day kidnapping when police and The Rocky Mountain News executed a ruse to make gangsters suspect each other of treachery. The paper published a false ransom note to trigger rival suspicions and prevent payment. The four gang members, including the chief, were not arrested.
