Gov. Kohler announced Wisconsin will launch its largest road program in history this year with a total of 107 million dollars in new spending. He urged a balanced plan to maintain town, county, state, and urban roads, stressing the importance of improving remote town routes as well as busy state highways.
In Antigo, two young drivers died from monoxide fumes while parked at the M and I Potato Co. warehouse area. James H. Makore, 21, of Bowling Green Kentucky, and another driver from Bowling Green, were found in the truck with the motor likely left running. Coroner Herry Gibbons noted overnight air temperatures were around 12 degrees.
The toll climbed to 35 in the current period, up from the prior year. A fatal crash occurred when a vehicle collided with another near the Jefferson County village of Rome. Pan Beidaisch, 38, died after being struck by a truck at an intersection on Milwaukee's South Side.
In Milwaukee, Paul Beidarsch, 38, died after being struck by a truck driven by Harold Frank, 37. Police report Beidarsch stepped into the path of the vehicle and could not be stopped in time.
Workers at the American owned Standard Fruit Co. agreed to arbitration on Monday resolving grievances. The action ended a threatened general strike at the banana center in La Ceiba. The union accused the company of non compliance with clauses of the August collective agreement.
The Wisconsin Secretary of State announces the incorporation of the Two Rivers Industrial Development Corp. by Hubert R. Wentori Joe Hoff man and William G. Rehrauer all of Two Rivers. The nonprofit aims to encourage growth in and around Two Rivers and may issue 1000 shares of stock at 100 per share.

Five gunmen wearing sheer scarves and gloves concealed their identities during an eight thousand dollar robbery at a Louisville beer establishment. They herded 21 employees into restrooms, waved pistols, and escaped with cash and receipts totaling around eight thousand dollars.

Frank Luedeke was elected president of the Courthouse Employees Association for a two one year term at a Monday noon meeting. He succeeds Morris Morissette. Other officers named include Jane Hackbarth vice president Ursula Cragg secretary treasurer and Kenneth Heine sergeant at arms. Executive committee members named were Morissette Carl Fukler and Carl Mailer.
Oshkosh records a fourth straight subzero reading as 6 15 am reports show 36 degrees below zero, quickly rising to 7 above by 7 30 am. The cold spell began Saturday with 34 below, then 9 below Sunday and 6 below Monday. Frost coated surroundings until sunrise.

Madison Jan 3 State Insurance Commissioner Paul Rogan said hearings on fire insurance rates postponed from Jan 30 to Feb 7 at the request of James Donovan NY attorney for the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau. Rogan said the hearings will review rates proposed by the bureau as technicians in his department claim the rates are excessive.
