Russian capital endures seething unrest as strikes and troops clash. Reports say 96 killed and 834 wounded over the weekend with barricades, wrecked shops, and mass demonstrations. Authorities pledge control while rumors swirl of proclamations and attempted arms distribution.
Madison Wis Tan 24 The assembly passed under suspension of rules the bill to enroll bills by printing in the future rather than pen. Other measures include reducing exemptions for classes and a clause setting 75 percent of wage earnings exempt up to 60 dollars, plus a cash sale requirement for state funds and an elective Milwaukee school board. Adjournment likely tomorrow with possible Thursday session and Monday night return.
Washington January 24. Representative Davidson reports Indian Commissioner Leupp says the interior auditor will pay the separate bands of the Six Nations their share of the supreme court award for lands in Kansas. Payment will go to bands with no Mitigation in the court of claims. Brothertown Todians will receive later. Milwaukee county's hospital at Wanweatom suffered about $10000 in fire damage today. No injuries among the 400 inmates and there was no panic. The blaze started in the male employees dormitory in the central portion of the building.
AP dispatch from San Francisco reports the Southern Pacific Overland Limited wreck occurred near Lovelocks, injuring unknown number of passengers and crew. Details are unclear on cause and extent as of this hour.
Special to The Northwestern reports from Washington on January 4 as the Senate organized a court of impeachment to try Federal Judge Swayne of Florida. Chief Justice Puller presided, President Pro Tem Frye and Senator Platt were sworn, and impeachment managers were announced with orders for process against Judge Swayne returnable Friday at one o'clock.
A Wisconsin alumni meeting for Winnebago county residents was scheduled for Wednesday evening January 23 at the Athearn hotel. The revival aims to form a county alumni association, elect officers, adopt bylaws, and discuss a banquet for members, with about fifty to sixty graduates in the county.
Witnesses describe two men robbing a saloon after a Sunday night visit. A slot machine and wire were damaged, three quarts of whisky likely taken from bottles, possibly more from a barrel, plus six cigar boxes and other items. Tracks show two men, one tall and one short, near the stove as the dog was tied. The incident was reported in The North Western.
The Ozhkowd Mutual Loan and Building Society elected officers for the year. J Howard Jenking was named president, George Hilton vice president, George W Johnson secretary, and Frank Labudde treasurer. State Senator E E Stevens declined to serve again after nineteen years as president. The society noted its 4.5 million in loans and appointed a committee to thank Stevens and extend congratulations.
