Oshkosh voters may vote to whittle council candidates to 14 in a primary if needed, with March 5 set as a potential primary date. The measure depends on more than 14 filings, avoiding a second filing deadline step, and a re-evaluation of necessity for other city offices.
Kenosha area plant walkouts idle 7,500 AMC workers as overnight talks fail to move. Pickets gather at the Kenosha assembly plant before 6 am while U S Mediation officials plan further talks. Union grievances center on layoff notice and seniority rules affecting 5,000 Milwaukee and 2,300 Kenosha workers. Local 72 CAW had authorized a strike.
President Eisenhower’s second inaugural address is hailed as a historic bid to freedom and leadership. Congress, caught in parade festivities, pauses to reflect while Republicans and Democrats alike praise the speech as a unifying call amid global responsibilities. Senator Mansfield lauds it as magnificent.
Jim Freel answered a call from a man saying someone stole the steering wheel and foot pedals from his car. Police obtained the address and dispatched a patrol. Moments later the same voice rang again saying everything was all right and that the thief was in the back seat.
Elkhorn Delavan waitress killed by estranged husband Zeno Zenon, Algerian native, after he stabbed her in the Robinson home. He later sat with one of the children as officers arrived. The couple separated last December after a Canada marriage of three years. Zenon claimed anger over a divorce property settlement. two children Roser 15 and David under 2. He indicated prior threats to kill unless settlement terms were resolved. The stabbing occurred before police and the scene was at the Robinson residence near Delavan.
The Medical Society of New Jersey condemned mercy killing as immoral and against sound medical practice. The statement opposed a state Senate petition to legalize euthanasia, notes that physicians would assess petitions and seek court orders, and recalls a similar 7 year old failed effort in New Jersey.
H Meade Alcorn Jr. of Connecticut was elected Republican national chairman unanimously by the GOP National Committee after winning Eisenhower's personal endorsement. He succeeds Leonard W. Hall, who retires Feb 1. Alcorn, 49, former Connecticut speaker and Hartford County district attorney, was Hall's deputy for convention planning. Opposition came mainly from conservatives and critics seeking Midwest or Far West leadership. The party aims to regain control of Congress in 1955.
In Chicago a grain elevator blaze at Central on the river front burned about five hours in rainy weather. Windy conditions sent flames 250 feet high, drawing 10 000 onlookers. Firefighters used 90 pieces of equipment but losses were put at at least 2 million dollars. a cameraman, Floyd Trdynham, died of a heart attack among the crowd.
U N General Assembly committee resumes disarmament talks as the United States and others seek to refer the issue to the Disarmament Commission. Soviet Russia offers two resolutions on a global halt to tests and subcommittee referral. Israel announces completion of troop withdrawals from Egypt except Gaza and Aqaba Gulf areas, raising concern over guarantees against future actions.
An out-of-season tornado swept through Gans Oklahoma near the Arkansas line killing eight people and injuring more than a dozen. Six homes were destroyed and families were left homeless as emergency crews, National Guard, and local officers rushed to the scene. Several victims and injured were from the Johnson and Jenkins families and others in the area. Ambulances ferried the dead and injured to Sallisaw and Fort Smith hospitals.
George Metesky, a 53 year old Waterbury tool maker, confessed to New York police that he is the "mad bomber" who planted 31 home made pipe bombs over 16 years. He said his motive was revenge against Consolidated Edison for a 1931 plant accident and that he used materials bought at local stores. He blamed no one else and insisted he never meant to hurt anyone, while authorities connected him to the bombings through letters and handwriting analysis.
Warsaw names Tadeusz Gede former deputy premier as ambassador to Russia in a move seen as key to replacing holdover Stalinists and advancing Gomulka liberalization. Officials anticipate mass government removals including Zenon Nowak and Kazimierz Mijal as Natolin hardliners are replaced. Final returns due Wednesday show Gomulka’s candidates sweeping near total majorities. Gomulka won 99 percent in his Warsaw district.
The United States and Brazil finalized a long term pact to establish an American guided missile observation station on Fernando de Noronha Island. Ambassador Ellis Briggs and Foreign Minister Jose C Macedo Soares signed for their nations after six months of talks and Brazilian approval by the National Security Council. The island will operate under Brazilian command and flag though used by the United States.
