Osborne House reports Queen Victoria died surrounded by her children and grandchildren after a brief illness. Telegrams from the Prince of Wales confirm her passing. the royal family and crowds prepare for a major funeral and unprecedented royal gathering.
News of the queen’s death prompts immediate half mast displays on business buildings including the Wall Street sub-treasury. Trinity Church bells tolled, but street noise muted the chimes. In Chicago elaborate memorial services are planned by former Britons with Canadians and others for a mass meeting and planning of services.
Telegraphs from London report the queen's life in grave danger with the prince of Wales near her bedside at Osborne and the royal family close to her. The lord mayor replies with deep sympathy as citizens share the royal grief at the Queen's illness.
Official bulletins from Osborne house report the queen is slowly sinking but not worse. By noon there is no change in her condition since this morning as the royal family gathers and she sleeps. The bishop of Winchester visited Osborne house as the end was not immediately expected.

Baer, Secretary and General Manager A. L. Hurchinssa.
New York on January 22 reports Stocks showed no durable reaction to the queen's death. Markets had priced in the news and trading levels remained steady. Several flags in the financial district, notably at international banks, were lowered to half mast.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on January 22 Associated Press reports barber Frank Janssen of South Scranton returned home drunk and fought with his wife. He threw a lighted lamp injuring his wife and sister, starting a blaze that killed their seven year old son and destroyed the house. Janssen was jailed.
President MacLean at Des Moines State University suspends ten sophomore students for abducting the freshman class president after the annual banquet. The freshmen president Stiles was seized on the street, placed in a hack, driven ten miles and kept in a farmhouse for two days.

St Paul Minn Jan 22 Senator Halverson introduced a bill making it a misdemeanor to sell offer for sale or bring into the state for the purpose of selling or giving away cigarettes cigarette papers or substitutes thereby restrictin g tobacco products in state commerce.
In Washington on January 12 the Senate unanimously adopted a resolution deploring the death of Victoria. A concurrent resolution was reported to assemble Congress in February to count the presidential electors and announce the outcome to the president.
James Dayton and Owen Fowler along with a team and sleigh were crossing Lake Wumnebaga near Oshkosh on Monday afternoon. A report says they did not reach Stockbridge and were last seen sober but ice conditions were poor. Local witnesses doubt they were drowned, noting Dayton’s past ice crossings and plans to visit Oshkosh later in the week.
Two saloonkeepers, Teter Larsen and Julius Toeppler, paid fines for selling liquor to a sixteen year old boy, Otto Erdman. Michael Rowland and Louis Sorenson pleaded not guilty and face trial later. Witness L. E. Scott, creamery man of Vinland, testified against them. Also, John Matthoffey, 74, was struck by a train car near Kaukauna Street, sustaining non life threatening injuries.
The Wisconsin senate heard Senator McGilivrays plan for a federal constitutional amendment giving the United States concurrent rights with states to pass trust suppression laws. New bills cut wage debt exemptions, raise homestead limits, and require public vote on franchises for quasi public firms. An anti pass law reduces session perks and shifts power to lawmakers.
An Evening Wisconsin special from Darlington reports a bold attempt to wreck the west-bound Milwaukee road passenger train. A 6 pound rail was laid across the track at the west end of the bridge over the Pecatonica river. If placed at the east end, the train would have plunged into the river. Four tramps are held on suspicion.
New York January 22 Lazard Freres will ship 1.4 million dollars in gold to Paris by Thursday's steamer. The Principals and the Kickapoo Bowling Club played a two game match at tenpins at the YMCA alleys Monday evening. The Principals won by a margin of twenty six points. Final scores were Principals ninety eight Kickapoos?
Carrie Nation, freed from jail days earlier, and two other women wrecked two saloons in Wichita. They shattered plate glass mirrors and damaged paintings, provoking arrests and a warning from police. Nation then spoke to a crowd of about 3,000, pledging continued earnest action.
Last evening Mrs Nation caused a sensation at the depot when Sheriff Simmons warned her of arrest. She struck the sheriff and twisted his ears, drawing a crowd into a frenzy before police aided and she was jailed.
Crowds at the Mansion House read posted updates on the queen’s condition. Balfour and the Duchess of Connaught’s children travel to Osborne as end of monarchy fears mount. Parliament and privy council preparations accelerate, while Londoners sing God Save the Queen outside the mansion.
Miss Louisa Gruenhagen daughter of August Gruenhagen of 145 Coapestreat died this morning after an illness with appendicitis aged thirty four. The funeral will probably occur Sunday. Mrs Eva Thom aged seventy one died today of asthma residing at 238 Fourteenth street. Funeral Friday at two o clock from the house. The funeral of Mrs Anton Raab was held this morning at nine o'clock from St Vincent s church on Oregon. Services were attended by a large gathering with many floral tributes.
Washington January 22 The senate has ratified the Spanish treaty by a vote of 38 to 1 The decisive action marks approval of the accord amid official duty and political significance for U S relations with Spain.
In joint sessions across states on January 22, Knute Nelson of Minnesota is chosen for a six year Senate term, while William J Sewell is re elected in New Jersey. Illinois selects Cullom for six years, Delaware and other states report ballot results. Minnesota also debates direct election by popular vote.
In a January session Robert J Gamble won a United States senate seat to replace Pettigrew. The Republican MP carried the Senate 33 to 6 and the House 76 to 3. Gamble born near Akron New York February 17 161 later moved to Wisconsin and Dakota practiced law and held local offices before serving in Congress.
George Wolfe of West Point was arrested in Fort Madison Iowa on a warrant sworn by Frederick Krickenbaum president of the West Point bank. He allegedly wrote a letter demanding 35000 be deposited under Pitman Creek bridge on a set date, threatened property burnings.
