President Nixon vowed to devote his energies to world peace and urged unity at home. He warned against rhetoric and urged a cathedral of spirit built by ordinary Americans. He pledged goals of full employment and better housing while stressing joint progress across races, regions, and cities.
Richard Milhous Nixon was sworn in as the 37th U.S. president amid tight security and a heavy rainfall, pledging to faithfully execute office and to preserve defend the Constitution. Eisenhower, hospitalized, urged unity as Nixon and Agnew began their terms, with two family Bibles opened to Isaiah as a nod to the era's Vietnam War tensions.
The Soviet Union proposed negotiations on disarmament including reducing nuclear missiles and anti missile systems. Kremlin officials said they are ready to discuss general and complete disarmament and measures ending production of nuclear weapons, while warning against U S strength rhetoric. The statement stressed a serious exchange of opinions on mutual restriction and delivery systems amid tensions before Nixon’s inauguration.
A United Air Lines Boeing 727 crashed after takeoff from Los Angeles bound for Denver and Milwaukee, killing 38 aboard and entombing 11 in a second wreck nearby. Recovery teams fought heavy seas and rain while identifying victims including a theology school president and a university student.
