Police opened fire on rioters protesting Nehru's plan to divide Bombay state. At least four protesters died, raising three day toll. Army stood by, curfew imposed, factories evacuated as clashes spread to Poona. Communists denounced the action while Billy Graham arrived as tension rose across the region.
Finland's Kalevi Kekkonen, a friend of Russia, leads in early returns as Agrarian Party gains most votes and seats. Communists finish third with 37 seats, Astarians win 89 of 300 in the Electoral Assembly, with Kekkonen poised to reach the 151 vote majority for president.
President Eisenhower will address the "Salute to Eisenhower" Republican Rally in person in Washington on Friday night his first public appearance since his wartime attack. The event supports 1956 election fund drives and will be carried by closed circuit TV to over 30 dinners nationwide. The speech, about 10 minutes, will be broadcast live on television and radio if networks pick it up. He will be introduced from Chicago by Vice President Nixon and will not discuss second term plans.

A Boston to New York Northeastern Airlines craft fought a snowstorm with radio and instrument failure before a safe LaGuardia landing. two died and one pilot missing on a separate crash in Canada. a Green Bay near-miss saved 12 with a belly landing after engine loss. a Troy Ohio jet trainer collision killed one with one survivor. a Chicago to Green Bay flight ended with a wheels-up landing after fuel pump failure.
Mrs Elaine Zablocki 21 told police a masked man slugged her with a rod Tuesday then offered first aid and apologized before fleeing when her husband entered the house. Police investigate the bizarre hold up and demand for $59.
Georgia Senate approved a four bill package backing segregation in schools and granted authority for school closures and private operation of facilities. Alabama juror and school choice measures moved, with Senate backing a "Freedom of Choice" plan to allow attendance at any school and a constitutional amendment to avoid forced integration.
In New Orleans Earl K. Long, heir to Huey Long, wins Louisiana governor race with about 50 percent across 1312 precincts. Morrison, Preus, Francis, and McLemore follow as Long secures more than 30 percent, ensuring no runoff. Runover vote centers crowded as voters flocked to polls amid state racial segregation debates and Reconstruction-era politics.
GREEN BAY Wis UP three government inspectors today in the cause of engine force made an emergency landing in a rural field. Nine passengers and three crew escaped injury Tuesday on Pilot Arden J Roeske of Madison who pancake landed the big plane flawlessly shortly after engines suddenly went dead. Roeske a 33 year old Air Force veteran who joined North Central in 1952 was credited with quick thinking which saved the lives of those aboard. Passengers said the pilot did a wonderful job. Enroute from Chicago Roeske who lives at Madison with his wife and three children is based at Chicago was enroute from Chicago to the Ansoin Strauble Apert when the trouble developed Both engines quit and Roeske radioed that he was making an emergency landing three miles south of the airport. The small field chase was the largest clearing in the area. The craft came in with wheels up and flaps down and came to rest on a country road. Roeske's co pilot was Le Bor i Misen 27 Madison. Stewardess was Miss ion Chicago. Whitewater Marion Hawley aged 32 and his wife with four children escaped a Tuesday house Fire in the latest run of bad luck. Hawley was treated for a leg injury at the hospital. the blaze damaged a room and caused some smoke damage but no serious harm.
The tanker Salem Maritime exploded near Lake Charles Louisiana, killing and wounding crew members. Forty one aboard, including the captain, were reported with 16 bodies feared trapped with 15 accounted for earlier. Docks and loading facilities burned, 1500 workers battled the blaze as fire crews rescued three sailors from the engine room. No immediate cause established.
