McCarthy opposes Brennan for U.S. Supreme Court nomination
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy Jr said he will oppose President Eisenhower's nomination of William J. Brennan to the Supreme Court though Brennan appears to have Senate votes. He stated he would raise concerns about Brennan's past speeches against congressional committees exposing Communists and noted Brennan used his prior New Jersey Supreme Court seat as a sounding board. Brennan would be the first Catholic on the high court since Frank Murphy in 1959. The nomination must pass the Senate Judiciary Committee before the full Senate vote.
