In Jamaica Queens a gas fueled fire with explosions leveled 20 wooden homes across eight blocks. Fire and police evacuated about 40 residents before flames spread, aided by two destroyed fire units. No injuries reported as heavy black smoke cleared by 8 am.
Firemen battled a stubborn blaze for over two hours at the Sheboygan Produce Co. building. Losses were put at more than 100000 with 95000 in contents and 50000 for the structure. The fire began when sparks from a blowtorch ignited sawdust in a section used by Sheboygan Meat Co. No injuries reported. Other tenants included Spiller Spring Co. and the third firm did not yet estimate losses.
White House sources say President Johnson will seek congressional approval for pay increases for federal military and civilian personnel. The budget to be sent this month includes about 1 billion dollars to fund raises in fiscal 1968, which begins July 1, with speculation of an average 3.5 to 4 percent rise.
The 13 members of Friday the 13th Club plan a day of defying superstitions by walking under ladders breaking mirrors opening umbrellas indoors and seeking black cats to cross their paths. Madison AP Wisconsin road construction plans for 1967 were slashed from 144 million to just over 80 million as federal aid losses and a bond ban forced cancellations. Major projects in Milwaukee, Eau Claire to Black River Falls, and parts of Interstate 94 were halted or scaled back, with some later restored but others dropped.
MADISON AP Key members of the Kellett task force will waver little from their blueprint to redesign state government. They kept the Health Welfare and Veterans Affairs merger in the omnibus bill with Health and Veterans Services as distinct divisions, and preserved the conservation water pollution merger. The Commerce department would house Banking Insurance Securities and Savings and Loans with regulatory duties remaining separate. Government checks totaling 31500 were issued to Wayne L. Bromley, a Washington attorney and former associate of Bobby Baker, with five companies allegedly paying Bromley for funds actually routed to Baker. The indictment names Baker, Bromley and Clifford Jones plotting to obfuscate payments and mislead tax collection efforts, with First Western Financial, United States Freight, and Harvey Aluminum cited among paying entities.
President Lyndon B. Johnson announced his intention to appoint Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Myron Gordon as judge for the new third district court in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The judgeship was created last spring by Congress.
Washington reports U S warplanes knocked out North Vietnam secondary airfields in mainly 1965 66 raids across Dien Bien Phu Vinh Na San and Dong Hoi with later strikes on Phu Tho. The raids paused last year as Hanoi Haiphong bases remained off limits to jets.
