At Switchback near Bluefield West Virginia an explosion at the Lick Branch mine killed dozens and may bury 100 or more workers under a searing heat. Rescue attempts stalled by heat as officials defend safety measures amid blame on foreign labor and open lamps.
In Oxford Ohio Mrs Mile Donnelly was shot dead in her home and a note signed by Frank Donnelly asked that his body be sent to his sister in Indiana. In Hamilton Ohio Frank Donnelly slashed his throat and shot himself after claiming hardship and prior quarrels with his wife. In Mankato Minnesota James York killed four children by throat cutting before hanging himself.
Bradford Merrill S Carvelho and Edward S Clark officers of Star company publishers of The New York American were found guilty of criminal libel on a Rockefeller Jr. charge. They faced possible imprisonment after the Supreme Court action and a writ of habeas corpus was sought. The suit claimed publication accusing Rockefeller of creating peonage in a Titinois breakfast food maker's system.
Special to The Northwestern reports a burglary in Shawano Wisconsin where P. F Jolan's home was entered last evening. The thieves took a gold watch and chain, helped themselves to lunch, and fled without waking any occupants.

Washington Jan 12 The Senate passed a resolution by Senator Foraker demanding an itemized statement of the $3,000,000 appropriation used as an emergency fund. The grant funded detectives in the Brownsville affair, drawing sharp criticism of the president and former Secretary Taft. Foraker’s later Brownsville debate drew a large gallery crowd including many Negro attendees as he defended the Twenty fifth regiment and attacked official statements. He read letters from discharged soldiers denying detectives’ accounts, pledging to reveal any further correspondence when time comes. He warned of accountability for all connected with the case.
Ebner T. Ellsworth is held for trial on a complaint by Mrs. Kate Kennedy alleging he obtained money under false pretenses. Bail is set at 1200 dollars after a lengthy preliminary hearing described as highly sensational. The plaintiff says a ruby valued at 1000 dollars was actually worth only 10 dollars and the plot involved disposing of her husband.

The court room was filled with expectations of sensational developments as he recounted events preceding the bank's collapse.
