The Soviet Union launched Venus 6 to Venus with Venus 5, aiming for a mid May arrival. Venus 6, bearing Lenin’s pennant, will attempt a smooth atmospheric descent and carry scientific experiments, as only Venus 4 has transmitted data so far.
New York sources report the Saturday Evening Post will fold today after 148 years. The biweekly periodical, priced at 50 cents, has faced declining advertising revenue through the 1960s and is under consideration for a merger or sale as Curtis Publishing weighs its options.
A crowd of concerned students protested delaying a vote on reinstating black students expelled Dec 20 after a Nov 2 demonstration. The 20 member Advisory Committee for the Culturally Distinct Student discussed implementing demands for a black cultural center curriculum and black instructors. The faculty senate recommended reinstatement in time for classes next semester.
Washington reports Apollo 11 astronauts named as Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin to fly the first U.S. lunar landing. Armstrong and Aldrin will attempt the moon touchdown while Collins orbits 69 miles above. The crew joins the broader Apollo program aiming for a July moon landing within the decade.
Washington AP reports the lame duck era nears as public officials, soon to be replaced by Nixon’s administration, push for continued programs and new welfare measures. Wilbur J. Cohen urged three federal agencies to combat malnutrition and expand food stamps, while Udall and Wood voiced enviro and housing perspectives and Betty Furness called for better auto warranty oversight.
NASA astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders rode amid ticker tape along lower Broadway in a windy New York welcome after Washington ceremonies. Gov Rockefeller Mayor Lindsay and security plus Mrs Lovell and the Anders families joined the parade ending at Bowling Green.
Wisconsin’s 133 lawmakers launch the 1969-71 session January 21 with the budget as the central issue. Tax reform highway safety and family planning follow, while crime police reform and education disruptions spark proposals from several senators and assemblymen.
