In Saigon a bomb exploded near the My Canh floating restaurant injuring a peddler and drawing police to suspect a planned second blast. Officials say 19 people have been arrested in three terrorist incidents over five weeks as the bombing pause in North Viet Nam nears two weeks.
The FAA orders airlines to move flight recorders to the rear fuselage from the main landing gear well to aid crash investigations. The Tuesday order takes effect February 5 and applies to all carrier aircraft.
In Chicago a deadly shooting followed a dispute over auto repairs. A young man opened fire inside a shop, fatally wounding Ed ner Fehrmar, 43, co-owner of the pam Geescoe, before fleeing into an inner office. Other employees escaped and flagged down a deputy, with authorities continuing coverage on Page 14.
Wisconsin shivered under a severe subzero cold wave with temperatures dropping to 24 below in Eau Claire and 27 below in the Duluth Superior area. Other readings included 17 below in Wausau and 13 below in Green Bay with Madison at 10 below as the high in Eau Claire. The Weather Bureau blamed a strong cold high from the Dakotas and Minnesota for the Arctic invasion and warned readings would ease as the high shifts east toward Indiana.
UPD A champion collie named Dinkie in Lincoln has a gold tooth fitted by a local dentist after breaking a front tooth. The procedure cost 56 dollars and was disclosed in local dog sport coverage.
A Senate fact finding team led by Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield warned as the Vietnamese war grows, North Vietnam leans on China and Hanoi may need China to agree to any settlement. The five lawmakers warned the war could widen to a general Asian conflict, with slim chances for a just negotiated peace. The group visited 12 countries and Hong Kong, reporting Viet Cong influence remains strong in South Vietnam.
A Soviet delegation led by Alexander Shelepin began talks in Hanoi with North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh. Tass reported no details. Shelepin said the USSR will provide comprehensive support to the Vietnamese against U.S. aggression and that the cause is righteous.
Pope Paul VI told diplomats in the Vatican he is ready to attempt any means beyond protocol to secure a just peace among nations. He cited his New Year pleas to Moscow Peking Hanoi and Saigon and noted the Church’s role in promoting peace in Viet Nam and globally through moral authority.
Wisconsin deaths in 1966 traffic toll reach thirteen after a fatal crash in Washington County killing three year old Michele Mary Listle. Her mother Marlene and brother Roger survived with minor injuries as the car hit a tree on a town road. In Arizona a Wisconsin couple Jens and Agnes Casperson of Stratford died in a two car crash on US 66 near Kingman. Their daughters Marlene and Karen were hospitalized in fair condition.
Washington reports that the President Johnson's Committee for Traffic Safety led a major drive that lowered the national traffic death rate in 1965. Preliminary figures show 5.3 deaths per 100 million miles of travel, down from 5.4 in 1964. William Randolph Hearst Jr. heads the committee.
Armed Forces Minister Francisco J. Rivera Caminero says troops are not rebelling but seek President Garcia Godoy to cancel orders sending top officers abroad. He denies a coup and cites risk of Communist influence as rationale for obeying the president.
New York mediator reported some small progress in talks to end the subway and bus strike. Steven L. White, 44, accused of kidnapping and attempted robbery of the Superior Housing Authority manager, waived a preliminary hearing and was bound over to Circuit Court for trial. He reportedly forced entry at gunpoint into Joseph Tepoorten’s home Tuesday night and directed the manager to open the safe, which contained no money.
Gov. Warren P. Knowles said at a Madison news conference he sees no quick solution to Wisconsin government reorganization. He called it a long range goal despite a temporary commission recommending a split of 90 agencies into 12 divisions. He expects little legislative progress due to the upcoming election year.
