Washington January 7 A conference was held with President Roosevelt inviting Speaker Cannon and several leading Republicans from the Senate and House to discuss pending tariff questions. The aim was to reconcile differences and seek a unified approach, with no immediate tariff action expected this winter.
A Brooklyn Rapid Transit trolley carrying forty Adirondack council Royal Arcanum members jumped a track on Douglas Street and toppled, leaving several injured. No fatalities. Some passengers were trapped in slush and water two feet deep but were rescued before drowning. Others received first aid then went to hospitals.

Special to The Northwestern Madison Wisconsin January 7 192? news reports the quiet discreet appointment of A L Sanborn to succeed Judge Romanzy Bunn as United States district judge. Bunn had resigned weeks earlier but the telegram announcing Sanborns appointment arrived from Washington. The change likely meets little opposition beyond family faction lines. Judge Bunn born 1849 in Hartwich Wisconsin served until retirement on full pay but preferred active work.
Lawrence county native Arthur S Sanborn born 180 in New York moved to Geneva Wisconsin and rose from poverty to a noted lawyer. He partnered with Spooner and later edited Wisconsin statutes with Ber ryman. Appointed western district judge for Wisconsin to succeed Romans Hunn and will sit at Madison with sessions also at La Crosse and Eau Claire.
New York report on Mrs William H Gelshenen tied to the Dodge Morse divorce remain unresolved. The family’s possible presence aboard the Deutschland bound for Naples or arrangements to sail for Europe are disputed by her attorneys who say the departure was unrelated to the Morse case.

Cleveland Jan 7 Judge Wing abrogated the order banning Chadwick from wearing certain attire without a written permit signed by the U S marshal. The ruling places Mrs Chadwick under sheriff jurisdiction while confined in the county jail, with the sheriff deciding who may see her. It is possible federal officials may move to transfer her to another jail or prison.
In St Petersburg with heavy hearts Russia marks Christmas amid war grief and cold. He once presided Kaukauna harbor efforts and ran for Congress in 1888, losing to Senator Lawyer while carrying 2,000 more votes than his ticket.
