Ernest Arnold, 22, tells the court he is a rubbish collector when charged with theft. He upholds the label garbologist as his occupation, insisting the term reflects his work in waste management and social duties.
Mayor Lindsay reported talks on the subway and bus strike moved in good faith but the public must sweat out a settlement. An explosion and fire in La Crosse killed an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Saley, aged 73 and 88. The blast damaged an adjacent home and broke windows within a block. Firefighters said the house exploded around 6 03 p m and were on scene quickly.
An elderly couple died in Crawford County reducing Wisconsin road toll to 11 for 1966. Edward Lawver, 75, and his wife Nettie, 77, of Blue River, were killed when their car veered off Highway 60 near Boscobel, plunging 70 feet down an embankment.
In St Paul Minnesota an early morning fire swept the four story Carleton Hotel apartment building. Eleven people were killed and sixteen injured as occupants fled flames and many leaped from upper floors. Firemen battled the blaze as rescuers helped those on the second floor. Authorities reported about a dozen of the building's 31 occupants were unaccounted for at midmorning with some believed to have fled or found refuge elsewhere.
The Defense Department disclosed that production of 750-pound bombs halted for about six to seven months during the early U S air war in Vietnam. The 500-pound bombs also stopped in fall 1963, with 500s resuming in late 1963 and 750s restarting in March 1965 after American airstrikes began.
A roaring general alarm fire swept two rooming houses in Union City New Jersey killing seven people and wounding seven. Ten families were forced from the smoke filled buildings as flames rose fifteen feet above the rooftops. Names identified include Mrs. Filene Santora 42 Mrs. Evelyn Crawley 50 Arthur Matherson 69 Pedro Gonzalez 34 James Woodcock 43 Chico Veria 35 and Lyman Pierce 83.
Viet Cong attackers struck Saigon twice with a Claymore mine at the military airport gate and a plastic bomb at a police substation. Four BS servicemen were slightly wounded and one Vietnamese civilian was killed with three others injured. The attacks followed Allied efforts to disable Viet Cong installations in three areas over the previous 48 hours.
The Church of England offers 5560 as the top prize in an art contest to design a recruiting poster aimed at attracting more men to join the clergy.
President Johnson expresses optimism about the Viet Nam peace offensive. He notes diplomacy by envoys like Hariman and Goldberg has intensified, with indirect contact to Hanoi and hidden diplomatic traffic peaking since the campaign began. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who led the Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor, was reported in serious condition at Oakland Naval Hospital. The Navy said the 90 year old suffered a moderate cerebral thrombosis, a stroke, but described his condition as satisfactory at present.
