Oshkosh residents packed the new City Hall during a Sunday open house for the recently remodeled four floor building. An estimated 4500 to 5000 visitors toured by 5 p.m. and heard tributes to Councilman Steiger for proposing the project in 1954.
John Morrow of Seagull Road in Vagrant Bournemouth England cut his arm Sunday while smashing a window to shoo a vagrant seagull from his house. The incident was reported by UPI.
Thomas Heather of Kenosha died after gunshot injuries and a provisional death Friday. Despite a brief cardiac revival and respirator support, doctors described him neurologically dead with irreparable brain damage and no further hope for survival.
A head on collision on Highway 23 west of Rosendale left three dead after 3 45 p m Two victims were dead on arrival at St Agnes Hospital and a third died later Sunday Victims were Lloyd Conry 64 of Fond du Lac manager of Woolworth Fond du Lac Mrs William Ryan 50 of Brookfield and William Nicholas 18 of Pawcatuck Conn all Ripon College freshmen Also injured were a Ripon College student and another in poor condition The Raans were returning their son and his guest to the college while Conry was driving east The accident occurred on a straight stretch near Rosendale The two college victims were housed at Scott Hall and members of ROTC The weekend toll also included eight other deaths on Wisconsin highways raising the 1964 state fatality toll to 27.
East German authorities sealed the Berlin wall again ending 17 days of West Berlin reunions. A record crowd of more than a quarter million West Berliners crossed into the Communist zone on the last day of a Christmas visits agreement. Crossings began December 19 and thousands waited at checkpoints as the period ended at midnight.
In Wisconsin a new chief justice and a new associate justice were sworn in at the state Supreme Court chamber. George R. Currie, 66, becomes chief justice, succeeding Timothy Brown who retires after 14 years as chief and justice. Bruce Beilfuss, from Nashville, takes oath as the court’s newest member, elected in April to a 14 year term. Currie’s salary rises to 24000 and Beilfuss also earns 24000.
Former Bulgarian diplomat and UN delegate Yan Georgiev was executed by firing squad in Sofia after losing a clemency appeal. He had confessed to spying for the United States in exchange for a life of wine and women, a claim the National Assembly rejected.
Neera Harold Lonzo Franklin, 31, becomes the first black student to attend Auburn University’s Magnesia Dormitory. He began history classes at 10 am amid minimal federal escort, a largely quiet first night after a court order secured a dorm room in Magnolia Hall. State troopers pulled back most security as patrol presence remained light.
Northwestern Correspondent reports Wisconsin GOP leaders plan for the presidential primary as Rep John W Byrnes of Green Bay consents to be a favorite son candidate. In a letter to State Party Chairman Talbot Peterson Byrnes states he assumes the party is composed of a state uncommitted and uncontested by any major president nominee. Continued on Page til Cal 6.
Sandra Douglas of Blyth England wrote to a wristwatch firm claiming she tied a new watch to her bicycle wheel and rode it through mud and puddles to test it as seen on television. The watch stopped and the company promised an investigation but sent no replacement.
Pope Paul VI wrapped up a three day peace pilgrimage in Bethlehem and Jerusalem urging world leaders and Christians to pursue peace and unity. He met Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras I and flew home via Amman, ending a historic Holy Land visit marked by calls for goodwill and church revival.
In Times Square, an arsonist set a fire in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Astor causing $1 million in damage. The blaze, definitely set, was controlled within an hour with no injuries. A man in a crewcut and trenchcoat fled. police questioned him briefly and released him.
A large scale search for a missing Air Force plane and crew intensified Sunday and continued Sunday night over the Pacific. The last contact with the aircraft was made near Wake Island, with four Navy men and a civilian on board. The search focused on the area southwest of Hawaii as rescue teams combed the sea for wreckage and survivors.
