In Algiers and the countryside, police roadblocks and troop patrols mark the start of a referendum on De Gaulle’s plan for local self government in Algeria. Bombs hit Radio Algiers power lines just as De Gaulle prepared his appeal, causing damage but not halting voting.
The GOP chair Thruston B Morton said the Nixon defeat was a temporary setback and pledged continued adherence to core principles. He spoke to the National Committee and urged confidence as party leaders seek a positive program. Belgium reports a 18 day strike collapse but unrest continues in Liege and Limburg Luxembourg provinces.
Morton urged the national committee to bolster party organization for 1962, arguing the 1960 gains show the party’s strength and that no new Mackinac Island conference or manifesto is needed. He claimed the GOP did not suffer repudiation and remains in strong shape after a major election loss. He closed by urging focus on policy and leadership.
AP dispatch reports Shizuoka Japan defense director Naomi Nishimura says a new five year program cannot begin until American military aid totals are decided. The delay stretches into another year as Tokyo negotiates funding and scale for defense plans.
Felton California with a population of 400 invites the state of California to breakfast on Sunday June 4. General Chairman Bob Gray of the Felton Merchants Association extended the invitation to all Californians. Ham and eggs hot cakes and coffee will be served on a mile of tables.
A four story hotel at 971 Mission St in San Francisco burned after 5 a.m. trapping residents and killing at least 15. Survivors fled down ropes and stairs in freezing 7 degree air as firefighters fought the blaze and rushed dozens to emergency hospitals. Many residents were elderly pensioners and others unable to work.
The Associated Press reports Wisconsin has raised its traffic death toll to 14 as crews continued response and authorities investigated the latest crashes. Local officials urged drivers to exercise caution amid worsening road conditions and winter weather.
President elect John F Kennedy and an economic policy group discuss tax cuts and stimulus to revive the economy. Arene talks include Dean Rusk and economists Samuelson Heller and Tobin. Kennedy plans to stay in Wisconsin tonight then head to Washington for business talks.
UAW estimates Kohler strike participants in Kohler Wisconsin will receive about half a million dollars in income tax refunds after the Supreme Court ruling on strike benefits. Emil Mazey says IRS will implement the decision and treat strike benefits as gifts exempt from federal tax. The union paid over $10 million in strike benefits during the walkout.
The Senate voted by voice to take up proposed rules changes aimed at curbing filibusters as new Kennedy administration bills loom. Supporters say the issue won’t bar Congress from acting, while critics warn of overreach.
Cuban forces massed along Havana and suburbs with antiaircraft guns and militia patrolling rooftops. A Chile-Ecuador resolution urging peaceful settlement wasn’t voted on.
Nigeria demanded the French ambassador and staff leave within a day in protest of France’s third atomic blast about 900 miles away. Lagos barred French ships and planes from ports and airfields and warned of sterner measures unless testing ends. expulsion did not break diplomatic ties and Paris had no immediate reply.
