New York subway traffic halted after an electric conduit explosion near the Fiftieth and Fifty ninth streets triggers a blaze. Hundreds injured, one woman dead, with ambulances and police battling smoke, crowding streets, and widespread congestion across Manhattan and nearby lines.
Fire victims crowded Flower Hospital as ventilator grates and marble covers were removed at the Fiftieth and Fifty-ninth street stations. Firemen fought through blinding smoke to rescue hundreds, while reports described an explosion that started the blaze in a train between the two stops. Mannette Wis Jan 5 Edward Carlson fifty three longshoreman and pioneer resident was found dead this morning by his wife. He hanged himself in the weather shed. Despondency over lack of employment caused the tragedy.

Chicago January 6 1915 wheat prices opened lower by 8 to 14 cents from the previous close as traders showed cautiousness after a radical advance last week. The reaction was attributed to a disposition among leading traders to adopt caution in dealing on the strong run.
Paris dispatch reports French forces advances at four points from northeast to Alapee with gains near the Rhelma forest and Courte Chaussee, Lepretre, and Steinbach while Italian Garibaldi unit, led by Constantine Garibaldi, presses a breach in Argonne trenches and seizes 130 prisoners and a machine gun, though GERMAN lines counter near Sennheim. 1,400 prisoners reported by German official in Poland.
