A 66 year old Kimberly man fatally shot his 37 year old wife Dorothy with a .22 pistol then killed himself during a quarrel at their home near Kimberly New Year’s Day. Charess L. Dehart, a Kimberly Clark millworker, and his wife died 90 minutes later at St Elizabeth Hospital Appleton. Outagamie County Coroner Bernard H Kemps ruled the deaths murder suicide. Jack Ruby, 55, the man who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died at Parkland Hospital in Dallas after a cancer diagnosis. He had been hospitalized since December 9 after a illness first treated as a cold, then pneumonia, then cancer that spread to lymph glands, lungs and pancreas. Doctors said X rays and surgery would not help.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court postponed a decision on long time legislative leader Paul Alfonsi's bribery appeal, leaving him silent as the 1967 Legislature was sworn in. Justices planned to issue a ruling next week, while Alfonsi's attorney called the delay unremarkable.
Wisconsin Gov. Knowles, sworn in for a second term, pledged broad goals in education economic development natural resources and urban living. He hinted at new programs for urban affairs and cleaner air but offered few details, delaying budget plans and proposals until the 1967 Legislature convenes.
NEW HOLSTEIN Wisconsin UPI Police and Fire commissioners terminated Patrolman Stuart Wetenkamp after he struck sixth grade teacher George Patz who had disciplined his son. Wetenkamp had been on the force about a year and had been suspended since September 9.
In Key West authorities arrested a heavily armed group of Latin exiles and American adventurers Monday night, stopping a vest pocket invasion of Haiti. One organizer claimed a boatload of commandos escaped, with Rolando Masferrer stating the ship had about 50 men aboard and was to rendezvous with other boats near a Haitian shore.
Mayor Kenneth Holmes received a letter from Wisconsin State Planning Director Walter K Johnson stating Menasha’s federal urban renewal funds application will be placed on the priority list. The process was delayed after August when the state found the application not processed with the federal government, making July 1 deadline unworkable. Meetings with local officials will determine placement, with an initial HUD request of about $44,000.
Two people were hospitalized after a car collided with a Soo Line box car at the Winneconne Avenue crossing. Glenn Mittlestadt, 32, Appleton, and Marcia Falck, 29, Neenah, were treated at Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in Neenah and were in satisfactory condition. Mittlestadt had a fractured left leg. Falck had facial lacerations and a right leg injury. Operator Alvin Lemay, 47, Neenah, said Mittlestadt traveled east on Winneconne Avenue as the train moved north, with the auto striking the seventh car back. Additional accidents occurred at South Commercial Street and Washington Avenue and on Torrey Street near Main Street involving Richard Lochning, Raymond Hoppe, John Trilling, and William Ducal.
The Associated Press reports nine traffic deaths on Wisconsin roads during the long New Year holiday, seven since the year began. Notable fatalities include Lawrence P. Johnson and Ronald G. Larson, both 23, of La Crosse, killed when their car struck a bridge support on Highway 15 near the city. Sidney F. Daily, 46, of Beaver Dam, injured fatally after his car slid off an Interstate near Janesville. Thomas E. Wesala, 21, of Superior, killed in a crash on Highway 13 near Medford. Other victims include Martin R. May, 20, from Las Vegas, a Coast Guardsman stationed at Washington Island, and Timothy J. Hoile, 18, of Continued.
Neenah Menasha area schools resume classes Wednesday at usual times. Menasha Public Schools and several parochial schools restart, while St Mary High School and Neenah Trinity Lutheran remain on holiday until Monday. St Mary Elementary, St John, St Patrick, Grace Lutheran, St Gabriel, and St Margaret Mary reopen. St Margaret Mary uses new junior high addition. Menasha Trinity Lutheran and Martin Luther School in Neenah began today.
Broadview Corporation officials say covenant easing for only residential development in Southview will proceed after city council approval. RV Hawser signed a 365280 purchase for 1632 gross acres at 4009 per acre. 344 acres to Neenah Foundry adjacent parcels, pending rezoning from residential to industrial near Byrd Avenue between Bell and Joseph Streets.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld the $300 million bonding program to aid cities in building sewage plants, ruling the plan constitutional under the state debt limit. Justice Hanley said the lease and sublease arrangement creates no enforceable obligation, allowing bonding to proceed May 1.
The City of Neenah schedules Finance Committee today at 4 15 PM and City Council Wednesday at 7 30 PM. Health and Welfare Committee meets Thursday at 4 PM.
Madison Assembly Speaker Robert Huber sounded a broken note as his two year tenure neared its end. He pounded for adjournment to the swearing in ceremony of Assemblymen, and the wooden gavel fell apart in the chamber.
