The New Year holiday traffic toll rose to 299 deaths, with totals for the two-day period reaching 679 nationwide. States reporting high fatalities included Texas, California, Minnesota, New York, and Kentucky as safety officials call for tougher laws and enforcement to curb reckless driving.
