Washington December turmoil deepens as the Persia sinks with American lives. Consuls around Alexandria gather affidavits from Persia survivors. President Wilson speeds to Washington to consult Lansing and other cabinet members as Congress reconvenes.

At General Serra's request the American consul John E Kehil has assumed charge of Turkish and German interests in Saloniki. The German Austro Hungarian Turkish and Besarian consuls were arrested last Thursday by order of General Sarrad after a Teutonic air bombardment. A dispatch on Saturday said the American consul had taken over Aust Hungarian interests.

London reports confirm the Glengyle sunk in the Mediterranean with about 100 survivors. Also listed as lost is the St Oswald, last seen near Mudros after sailing from Alexand ria. The Glengyle, 9,300 tons, built 1914, carried passengers and crew with many nationalities aboard.
Copenhagen reports the Ford peace expedition granted permission to travel through German territory by a special train. The group will depart next Friday under strict conditions including sealed trains and no written papers, with disbandment in Rotterdam and most members returning home. The US government declined to extend passports for the journey.
George B. Roberts of the National Bank of New York tells a Pan American congress panel that postwar South American trade will hinge on American investment. Representative Frear of Wisconsin will introduce a bill creating a national waterway commission. He says the current river and harbor program wastes funds and allows corrupt practices, asserting two thirds of the 85 million dollars spent on waterways has been squandered. The new commission would oversee all waterway improvements.
The Steamer Eastland was sold for 40800 to Captain Edward A Evers of the Minis naval reserve, confirmed today by Judge Landis. Counsel for claimants argued the hull estate assets exceed 125.06 and noted the disaster involving the excursion boat last July.
Davenport January 3. Acting on the Iowa Liquor Desilers association test case the saloon of John Hill was opened in Davenport. A crowd gathered as liquor flowed. About ten o clock special agents from the state attorney general's office entered and ordered the saloon closed. John Hill proprietor and two bartenders were placed under arrest.
Mrs. Even Ruddy known as Grandma Ruddy passes away on New Year’s Day at age eighty five in her daughter C. H. Jones home at 134 Monros Avenue after a long illness. Born in County Armagh Ireland she had long residence in the town of Yekimt. Funeral services scheduled for tomorrow.
