Captain Michael Golden Dies at Home in Sudden Death
Captain Michael Golden, veteran inland steamboat commander, died suddenly at his home 195 Mount Vernon Street at 9:45 this morning. Heart failure listed as the cause after his wife found him unresponsive while he sat by a coal stove. He had shown no prior distress, and his death follows recent family news including an accident involving his son-in-law in Duluth. He leaves a widow and daughter, with two unmarried sisters in Appleton and Rhinelander, and a long career aboard Leander Choate, Thistle, and other steamers. Fires burn at Breen grocery and Riley residence
Two fires occurred this morning with the Breen grocery store at 154 Mount Vernon street first hit at 8 30. The second blaze at 10 25 damaged Joseph Riley s Merritt street residence, starting in a second floor closet and breaking through the roof. Riley fire may have caused about 200 dollars in damage. The first fire was linked to attempts to tamper with water pipes in a toilet room.

Hedger Murder Trial Testimony on Stomach Contents
Milwaukee January 3 testimony from Dr Daniel Hopkinson professor of pathology at Marquette University for the defense questioned whether stomach contents can fix time of death.
