A former mental patient armed with an automatic rifle shot and killed four people and wounded five on a snowy rural road near Westernville New York before fleeing in a jeep with a snowplow. State troopers exchanged fire with him. he then killed himself.
State police report a 37 year old man Ralph MacLachlan armed with a .22 rifle killed nine people in the Route 46 hamlet of 275 residents near Remsen and then shot himself after a chase with troopers. Victims include his in laws and wife Anita. Eleven shots were exchanged. two families are cited in the tragedy.
In Birmingham England a three year old boy woke with a hangover on New Year’s Day after his mother found him stamped in a sofa with an empty bottle of port beside him. Doctors rushed him to hospital where his condition was monitored as a precaution.
Paris reports that U S Ambassador Cyrus R Vance met North Vietnamese envoy Col Ha Van Lau in a secret rendezvous south of Paris in a renewed push to restart stalled Paris peace talks The talks follow Saigon’s resistance to a Viet Cong roundtable format and U S patience with allied positions while Saigon presses for control over conference structure and recognition limits The effort centers on aligning military withdrawal demilitarization and an international system to curb infiltration by Northern troops with Saigon wary of any step that grants the Viet Cong a status beyond a subordinate role
Judy Elizabeth Slife, daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Slife, arrived at 4 45 p m Wednesday January 1 1969 weighing six pounds six ounces at Mercy Medical Center Oshkosh. Both mother and baby reported well. Family received gifts from Oshkosh merchants including life policy, cash awards, gift certificates, and family items in a year start baby celebration.
Ninety of 98 students arrested November 21 at Dempsey Hall were expelled until spring. Four whites not inside Dempsey Hall faced no punishment. All 100 arrested face unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct charges. A round table on the Oshkosh State University situation is set for Friday in Madison.
