Richard F Hammer a Beaver Dam attorney and partner in Hammer and Wells was found dead from a gunshot wound beside Highway 44 near the Highway 41 overpass on New Year's Day. Winnebago County coroner Dr G A Steele said the time of death was around 2 34 a m with a .38 caliber pistol found near his hand. No footprints were found in the snow other than the victim’s.
