The Associated Press reports a grave 78 hour holiday period with 488 highway deaths plus 42 fire deaths and 72 miscellaneous fatalities, totaling 602. Weather hindered travel with snow and ice, while enforcement stayed tight to curb violations during the peak season.
A New London couple returning from a Christmas trip to Bowler Wisconsin were killed in a three car crash three miles north of New London on Highway 45. Donald Pecard age 34 and his wife Winona 28 died. Their three children were injured and treated at New London Community Hospital where their mother worked as a nurse Judith Ann seven had a broken arm and leg Jeffrey four and Joseph two suffered head injuries and cuts. Two adults from other cars were injured and one hospitalized.
Washington AP reports Nelson Rockefeller’s withdrawal from the Republican presidential race. GOP leaders seek unity to back Nixon, while Democrats question the old guard and even discuss Rockefeller taking a post under a future Democratic president. Firemen found the couple in a smoke filled apartment as Patrolman Geiser and Fireman Castner restored breathing before ambulance arrival. Authorities attributed the blaze to a careless smoker.

Allan Lawrence Pope a Miami pilot facing death penalty charges for flying a bomber for Indonesian rebels had his court martial in Jakarta recessed until January 2 to consider defense protests. Born 1927, he flew Korean War missions and was captured May 18, 1958 after his B 26 was shot down over the Banda Sea during the Sumatra Celebes uprising.
