Rescue crews saved several score fishermen including some children as ice broke on Lake Winnebago. Officials warned nearby communities to keep off the lake until a sustained cold spell makes it safer.
A homemade bomb exploded in a crowded Fond du Lac theater injuring four youths and scattering people as panicked teens fled to the lobby. Investigators say the device was a blinding orange flash of firecrackers. none killed. Police coordinated with three counties for the rescue.
A thief snatched a box from Allen Barnett, 16, on a New York subway train. The box held a four foot boa constrictor and several iguana lizards Barnett was transporting to a pet exhibit.
The Milwaukee Green Bay area VOR facility at the county airport will be commissioned Monday marking its role in national air navigation. The 11th Wisconsin station, built by the U S Civil Aeronautics Administration, includes dual equipment and a monitor to ensure accuracy and auto alarms to Green Bay. A three year old boy named Anthony Simmons died when a weakening wall collapsed during a game of Cowboys and Indians in a derelict house in London. He was to turn four next week. Robert Newbold, 31, was in the Van Nuys court paying a 520 fine for speeding when an officer issued a new ticket for parking in Municipal Judge Julian Beck’s reserved space. Newbold pleaded innocent and a trial was set for January 23.
In Amonate Virginia 11 miners died from flash burns and concussion after a gas explosion at Pocahontas Fuel Co. Mine No 31. About 175 other miners escaped to safety while 14 trapped men were rescued unharmed after six hours. The bodies were recovered by dawn and laid out in a machine shop for final ID as a four way investigation began.
At Wisconsin State Reformatory three inmates died after consuming motor anti freeze laced with poison. Four more men were hospitalized as authorities identify victims Frank Penass, Mariel Sherman, and Mathew Johnson among others, with arrests and ongoing investigations into the incident.
A bandit wearing an Army jacket robbed a West Side Krambo supermarket in Green Bay Friday night around 8 p.m. Forcing a woman cashier to hand over most of the day’s receipts, the thief concealed about $2,000 in cash and checks. Police Lt. Fred Paulu said the suspect resembles a man wanted for a filling station robbery last week.
