Plantyn Wreck Disaster Detailed Account From Crews
In Porto Portugal on December 28 Captain Scott of the Plantyn reports a hurricane on December 17 tore away the poop deck engine room skylight and mast causing the loss of five life boats and four pinnaces. Four sailors and one passenger died and one more perished later. The crew fought floods and fire, jettisoned 460 tons to lighten ship, and the steamer stayed afloat until December 6 when G D T sighted them and reached the passengers and crew. Also reported death of Brigadier General Andrew A Humphreys from angina pectoris in Washington on December 28 after service in the Civil War and a rapid rise through ranks before mustering out in August.
