Tariff changes unlikely to alter chemical duties
Washington dispatch reports the subcommittee of the ways and means committee will likely keep the chemical tariff schedule largely intact while considering targeted requests. Manufacturers seek reductions for glue borax lactic acid and oppose a duty on synthetic camphor. They also argue for uniform rates on various dyeing and tanning extracts and a 20 percent ad valorem on benzoleic acid. The debate includes coal tar products, oxalic acid, and higher coal tar dye duties, with opposition from importers. A proposed shift to start the tariff law upon presidential signature risks court appeals and affects customs officials. Separately a medical examiners case involves Dr Bullard alleged to have taken notes for cures with disputed payments.
