Reform in Spanish treaty Loaves Sugar and Ore Trade
Delegates from oil, timber, and ore interests in Wisconsin met to unite against the Spanish treaty provisions especially the admission of California. A total capital of eighty five million dollars was discussed. Petitions protested the Spanish treaty in Senate hearings from cigar makers and Chicago tobacco dealers. The National Sugar Growers Association met with multiple states represented. President Coleman denounced the treaty as harming American sugars for foreign trade benefits. Letters urged action against Spanish, Mexican, and Hawaiian treaties and proposed a U.S. sugar bounty policy.
