Toll in Eastern Storm Rises to at Least 150

A bitter cold and wind blocked efforts to recover from a historic blizzard in the Northeast. The storm killed at least 150, crippled transport, and halted business as schools closed and railways faced delays. Snow drifts stacked up to 16 feet in New Jersey and 20 inches fell in parts of the East.

Honor Delayed For 10 Years

Charles M Saunders, then a sergeant first class in an Army medical company, received the Army Distinguished Service Award at Brooks Air Force Base. He rescued an injured person in Colorado on March 26, 1930, while frostbitten hands and feet limited the effort. The decoration, planned in 1940, was misplaced for a decade.
