Senate Finance Reports Back Direct Tax Rebate Bill

The Senate Finance Committee reported a bill by J. Morrill to refund direct taxes levied in 1861 to the states and districts, estimated at about sixteen million dollars, with action placed on the calendar. Soo Line first through train to Gladstone reaches goal

The first through passenger train from St Paul to Gladstone Michigan on the Soo line departed St Paul and ended in Gladstone by eleven last night. Completion to Sault Ste Marie is promised by December 20 with full 494 mile line ready for traffic. The route will shorten shipping to northern Wisconsin and Lake Michigan ports. The St Paul & Duluth tracks run to Bald Eagle Lake where a transfer to the Soo is made. Full line to St Paul expected around January 15.
