Nine airmen died when a B 36 bomber crash landed on Mount Franklin above El Paso in zero visibility during a ground controlled approach to Biggs Air Force Base. Wreckage burned with bodies guarded by Air police as daylight approached.
Vice President Nixon returns to Washington after a 45 000 mile 21 country tour seeking a broader survey of Asia the Far East and the Middle East for President Eisenhower. He may urge changes in approach to Asiatic problems and the information program while likely supporting nonrecognition of Communist China and continued military buildup in the Far East.
New Orleans. Navy and Marine Corps leaders warned that U S survival hinges on sea supremacy. Gen Lemuel Shepherd Jr said the nation must be ready to move forcefully to crises worldwide with a balanced naval task force. Adm Robert Carney warned Russia builds ships to challenge U S sea power and warships.
Outgoing Philippine President Elpidio Quirino told visiting U S congressmen that the United States should take the lead in forming a Pacific pact against Communism. He urged a regional security union as a key aim of his long standing foreign policy.

Burton Sinkler, 21, of Two Rivers died from head injuries after his car overturned on Highway 42 at the Two Rivers city limits. Passenger Norman Le Clair, 20, also of Two Rivers, suffered minor shoulder bruises. The crash occurred at 11 40 p m Friday night. Sinkler died at 6 50 a m today.
Twenty two unrepatriated American prisoners agreed to attend come home interviews as Allied authorities prepare to start talks Monday at Panmunjom. An Indian commander said he expects all to come out and interviewers will speak to prisoners one by one in up to five tents.
West Point defends a cadet forum decision to invite a critic of Senator McCarthy Brigadier General Telford Taylor, despite his loyalty file stigma. McCarthy demanded the academy identify who invited him and plans to press further, while Taylor warned of threats to morale. Police raided Cookie's Cigar Store in Kenosha early today breaking down a door and arresting 24 men on gambling charges. Authorities reported $200 in currency and dice and cards found in a back room. two Milwaukee men and others from Racine and Kenosha posted $25 bonds pending court. Jeffery Corlelli 32 and Anthony Conti 36 were freed on $500 bonds as operators.
Milwaukee report says burglars took a safe from Charles E. Gillett’s home on December 4. The safe was found Friday on a creek bank in the northern county. Inside were $15,000 in government bonds $30,000 in non negotiable bonds and two pieces of jewelry though all cash was gone.
Defense Secretary Wilson approved atomic age preparedness plans calling for expanding the Air Force to 137 wings while cutting Army and Navy manpower by about 600,000 through 1957. The Air Force would be the primary peacetime defense arm with greater emphasis on atomic weapons, and the plan would reduce battlefield forces, with details to be outlined in next year’s budget proposals.
The United Nations walked out of a Korean peace conference after charging the Communists with insults aimed at forcing the walkout. UN Envoy Arthur H. Dean said he would not return unless the Communists formally requested resumption of talks. Huang Hua accused the U S of perfidy and said Russia would be a neutral participant.
Defense Secretary Wilson announced the February draft call will drop to 18 000 men all for the Army. Pentagon officials say the cut is an interim measure not a long term plan. Army originally proposed boosting monthly calls to 37000 starting January to avoid a jump from 23000 in July.
More than 800 Milwaukee civic leaders and others attended the funeral for Francis H. Casey 55 secretary of the Marquette University board of governors. The Rev Edward J O Donnell led a requiem high mass at St Monica s Church Whitefish Bay. Casey died Wednesday of coronary thrombosis at Columbia Hospital after a brief illness.
Audrey Saunders, age five, was buried today after dying in a Market Street slum fire that also claimed four other children. Her kindergarten teacher Louise Boches recalled Audrey, who refused to be thankful and sang to baby Jesus amid religious cards, in a letter printed by the Waukegan News-Sun.
