Hartford Fire on the ninth floor trash chute ripped through Hartford Hospital killing 15 people and trapping more than 100 others. Six patients, five visitors, and four staff members died as flames and smoke filled corridors. Investigators questioned witnesses about a cigarette or gas cause while six hours of hearings continued.
A Panamanian freighter named Combined One sank in the South China Sea during a Friday storm. five survivors were rescued while 33 were feared dead as rescue efforts were hampered by rough seas and 33 knot winds near Ladd Reef.

Indian troops repelled an attack near the U N headquarters at dawn as the area prepared for maneuvers.
The death of 17 year old Harold Rickli, son of Edward and Mrs Rickli of Ridgeway, in a Darlington hospital after a rollover on Highway 77 Iowa County, follows the death of 17 year old Arthur Cutler of Ridgeway in the same crash. A separate Milwaukee incident left 11 year old Paul Baumgart dead after a bicycle collision with a car on the north side.
