A Pennsylvania Railroad express train carrying about 140 passengers derailed in central Pennsylvania’s rugged mountains. The crash left three injured after the Clevelander, traveling from New York to Cleveland, left the rails about 11930 pam isa while striking debris from a westbound train. Injured were Dempsey L. Sutton of Cleveland, Mrs. Jo Ann Mulligan of Bethesda Maryland, and John Morgan of New Castle Pennsylvania. Sutton suffered hand and leg injuries while Mulligan and Morgan were hospitalized with shock and contusions.
In Milwaukee a fatal shooting occurred during a basement game of cops and robbers when 10-year-old Vincent Sternig was killed by a shotgun misfired by friend David Tishim. David, who assembled the unloaded gun with safety off during the chase, said the accident happened as he pulled the trigger. He carried Vincent upstairs, left a note, and fled. Vincent’s body was found by his father Leo after returning from work.

A massive manhunt spread from North Carolina to southwest Virginia for 19 heavily armed felons who escaped from a Caswell County prison. Police report cars stolen in NC were found near Roanoke, including a green sedan possibly carrying other fugitives. Charles Edwards, 28, serving life for burglary and attempted rape, was recaptured within 62 hours of the breakout.
