Paris reports President Charles de Gaulle failed to win over the electorate in the first round, capturing 43.96 percent of Sunday’s vote with 84.9 percent turnout. The result forces a December 19 runoff against Francois Mitterrand, despite Gaullist hopes of broader backing.
Space Center Houston AP reports flight surgeon Dr Charles A Berry describes space suit noise that kept Gemini 7 astronauts awake as a bang swish and a metallic shhh clarifying the odd sound during the first night aboard.
The Wisconsin traffic toll reached 945 for 1965 after ten deaths in weekend highway accidents. Among the victims were Marvin Borths 25 of Marinette killed when his car went through a guard rail and into a slough on Highway 100. Richard Kranig 23 of Stevens Point died when his car overturned on a county road near Stevens Point. Thomas M Evans 24 of Sparta was fatally injured in a car truck collision on U S 16 west of Tomah. In South Viet Nam near a rubber plantation 40 miles northwest of Saigon U S infantrymen fought off multiple Viet Cong assaults aided by Air Force and Navy jets The fighting involved the 1st Infantry Division in its heaviest action since arrival Casualties were described as heavy for U S troops with Viet Cong deaths estimated up to 200 The Viet Cong warned of more blows against Saigon as Marines crossed offshore to strike a Viet Cong stronghold and destroyers and attack planes supported the operation
Eastern Airlines pilot Charles J. White gave his life to help evacuate passengers after a collision with a Trans World Airlines jet over northeastern Westchester County. Three others died and three were injured in the field. The two aircraft carried 112 people. Captain Thomas J. Carroll of the TWA flight guided his craft to a safe Kennedy landing. Federal investigators opened the probe into the crash cause. White, 42, was found dead inside the wrecked plane.
The Federal Reserve Board boosted rates to 4.5 percent, the highest since 1930, prompting a sharp market drop with the Dow down to 931.12. The action, aimed at curbing inflation and the balance of payments deficit, spurred immediate criticism from President Johnson while banks and investors faced higher borrowing costs.
Ten people including three clergymen were arrested after forming a human chain across the entrance to a construction site for a new Edward MacDowell elementary school on Milwaukee’s fringe. Police used force to disperse the demonstrators after 22 linked arms blocked workers arriving for the dawn shift. Clergymen named include Rev James E Gropps Rev William J Miles and Rev David G Owen. The protest followed an all night vigil opposing the school’s alleged Negro enrollment and potential segregation.
Peking Radio quoted Cambodian Chief of State Prince Norodom Sihanouk saying a military aid pact with China was agreed after a Cambodian military delegation visited Beijing from November 20 to December 3. The letter to Premier Chou Enlai, dated November 29, disclosed no details of the aid.
Astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell orbited earth as launch preparations for the two man Gemini rendezvous accelerated. At Cape Kennedy the electrical mating of the Gemini 6 booster neared readiness while Flight Director Kraft considered an eighth day in the Gemini 7 endurance mission.
A Wausau mother, Mrs. Joan Wilde, 24, died Sunday in a Milwaukee hospital after an explosion at her home on November 26. Her 3%-year-old twin sons, Randy and Ronnie, suffered burns while attempting to beat out the fire with their hands. Firemen cited a basement gas leak igniting when a coal furnace was opened as the cause. Mrs Wilde died at St. Marys Hospital burn center in Milwaukee.
University officials denounced an unsigned piece in the campus newspaper that outlined how to steal books from the university book shop. The issue sold twelve hundred copies, prompting urgent campus concern.
Three Navy crewmembers from Oshkosh join Project Gemini GT7 and GT6 aboard USS Wasp, the anti submarine warfare support carrier serving as primary recovery vessel. Electrician’s Mate 3 C Wayne M Juedes, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Airman John A Drexler, and Seaman Apprentice Thomas L Kubasta are named by home addresses and parentage. The Wasp, Boston home port, is a Gemini veteran that retrieved astronauts in GT4 and prepared for GTAG sortie before scrubbing.
London reports Britain rebuffed 36 African nations demand to crush Rhodesia by mid-December. Prime Minister Harold Wilson warned of possible break with OAU and said Britain aims to end the rebellion, preferably by negotiation. Commonwealth relations secretary Bottomley cited exchanges with President Kaunda, who sought security for Kariba Dam, a request deemed unacceptable.
Shullsburg man James Farrey, 4, was fatally shot when a revolver his brother in law Walter Shirley Jr. reached for in the back seat during a drive on Highway 71 near Shullsburg. Shirley, 25, New Diggings, claimed he was reaching for the weapon when it fired. Autopsy planned. sheriff noted no理由.
