Five Gary men face first degree murder charges in girl's death
A coroner's jury in Gary Indiana ruled Arlene Draves died from a cerebral hemorrhage after a criminal attack and recommended five men at a Saturday drinking party be held to the grand jury on first degree murder charges. Rev. Ernest F. Scherbel 80, longtime Middleton Evangelical Lutheran pastor, was killed in a collision near Madison. His car struck a truck at a blind curve between Mt Horch and Pine Bluff. driver Louis Swingum suffered minor injuries. Born in Saxony April 41 1859 he served in the German army in 1876 and came to the United States in 1871. He led Middleton's church since 1884 and is survived by a son and three daughters.
