A Round Lake illinois fire trapped a father James Olsen 36 and his three sons James Jr 16 Michael 6 and Joseph 4 in a five room home. The mother Ruth Olsen 49 and Robert 13 were injured and hospitalized in serious condition. Fire officials found Mrs Olson in a blanket and the father in a closet with the sons in a bedroom as the cause was not immediately determined.
Miss Juanita Pallengale 24 engaged to be married leaped to her death Friday evening from the 27th Street Viaduct. Authorities said her family reported she had been despondent recently.
United Press International reports Labor Day travel brings early deaths across the nation. As millions head for leisure spots, the National Safety Council warns the toll could reach 420 for the period, with 27 killed in traffic and 31 drowned so far. Brenda McIntosh, 18, of Fort Atkinson, died when her car left a town road and crashed into a tree.

The Athens Daily Post reports a NATO exercise planned along the Greek Turkish border for mid September has been canceled due to the ongoing Cyprus dispute.
Communist artillery opened fire across the Formosa Strait after a 13 hour typhoon pause. Nationalist outposts in the Matsu group were shelled with 16 rounds, while southern end targets on the Quemoy islands faced bombardment. Casualty reports cited 695 Nationalist soldiers killed this week amid resumed shelling.
