Defense Unit Reveals New Satellite Plan

The Defense Department on Friday night announced plans to launch communications satellites into high polar orbits to relay messages between ground bases and military aircraft. The system targets Strategic Air Command bombers and will have contracts awarded to General Electric and Bendix Aviation Corp. It builds on the December 18, 1953 satellite launch and Eisenhower Christmas message recording. The polar satellites will provide instantaneous communications in polar regions, operating at several thousand miles altitude and designed to resist enemy jamming and natural interference.
