Proceedings started in United States Federal court before Judge Kohl to recover funds linked to Oberlin M. Carter's speculations. Thomas Soukup, publisher of the only Bohemian weekly in the west, died at his La Crosse home after a short illness. He led the paper and served the Bohemian community in the region.
General Manager Frank Patterson of the Pittsburgh Johnstown Ebensburg and Eastern railway resigns his office and traffic on the line is halted while a successor is chosen. Patterson based in Altoona and the resignation reaches President S P Langdon in Philadelphia.
Reports say the steamer City of Trenton exploded off Torresdale fifteen miles north of Philadelphia. Three killed, seven drowned, twenty five injured. later dispatch notes no lives lost on Quaker City. Ambulances, police and emergency crews rushed to aid as river rescue continued.
A New York Yacht Club source says Constitution may substitute Columbia crew for Defender’s crew. Captain Barr denies the plan and praises Columbia’s condition and speed, citing a better mainsail as the main factor.
A runaway on the Versailles pike near Frankfort injures Mrs Ed Porter Thompson and grandchildren Eliott Orr Mund Orr Kate Thompson and Una Sudduth. Mrs Thompson and two grandchildren sustain internal injuries and a grave prognosis is given for Ed Mund Orr.
Dr. Thomas Markoe, professor emeritus of surgery at Columbia University, died at his East Hampton summer home. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from Princeton in 1838 and from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1841. He authored medical works and contributed valuable papers.
A 2000 man force crosses from Colombia into Venezuela to back President Castro's overthrow, with fears of wider conflict. Liberals align with Venezuela and Ecuador against conservatives. Colombia endures a two year revolt with heavy casualties and ongoing guerilla actions across multiple regions.
Chicago automobile club lays out a schedule for a 571 mile trek to the Buffalo Exposition starting Saturday September 7. An estimated thirty cars will depart with many members accompanied by wives or other family members over an eight day journey.

Detroit on August 28 reports no sessions at the National Fraternal congress. Morning delegates rode the White Star Steamer to St Clair Flats, then an afternoon trolley to Belle Isle for sightseeing and rallies.
Governor La Follette sent the gold medal provided by the legislature to Captain Harry W. Newton of Superior for his role in the capture of Asubuldo. The presentation will be Friday evening in Superior, with Assemblyman Lenroot designated to present the award and Governor Van Sant asked to permit the Duluth militia company to participate.
Reports from Wheeling claimed a tentative peace within ten days, but officials including President Shaffer refused to confirm. Amalgamated representatives expressed no overtures from strikers, while Linday and MacCutcheon works prepared for possible return under a provisional scale and non-discriminatory terms. In Pittsburg Rankin area the AMe Clintock Marshell works saw 150 of 500 striking riveters return to work. The company granted riveters a five percent raise and the introers were advanced 12 cents per day. The plant operated partially and the dispute was not tied to the steel workers strike.

James H. Hall’s bank at Kinde in Bad Axe County was burglarized last night. Thieves secured $10 but blew up the building and vault with explosive, causing a total loss of the vault and its contents including valuable papers.

Milwaukee August 28 Mayor David F Rose vetoed the ordinance granting a franchise to the Milwaukee Burlington and Lake Geneva Railway to build an electric elevated road within the city. The common council had passed the measure 36 to 10 and observers expect the council to override the veto when it comes before them.
Andrew Burzell of Chicago, brother of John Burzell, arrived in Oshkosh to take charge of his sibling’s remains after burial at Riverside cemetery. John Burwell, a Chicago lumber yard worker, bore the burial costs. the brother praised local officials and residents for kindness shown to the traveling laborer during the funeral arrangements and rites.
Simon Shelley died suddenly from heart failure about nine this morning at 34 Scott Street where he worked with Street Commissioner W. H. Allen. He was 49, survived by his wife and four sons, and bore Civil War scars from Pumpkin Vine Creek. He belonged to Phil Sheridan Post No 10 G A R.
Denver August 2 The American Forestry association session featured papers with A L Fallows of Denver presenting The Bibliography of Colorado. He argued that stream flow in arid regions could supply more water than needed for all practical uses if properly economized.
Concre Congressman J. H. Davidson and special agent Welton of the postal service toured the proposed rural mall route through Oshkosh and Vinland this morning. Friday they will inspect the route from Omro to Poygun.
Wealthy farmer William Montgomery shot his wife Bellaire resident Beaty and then killed himself. The motive remains unknown as investigators search for answers in the small Ohio community.
A quiet pretty wedding joined Edgar C. Gall and Miss Matilda Nolte in a ceremony at the First M E church parsonage Washington street officiated by Rev H Anderson. The bride wore sister Ida Nolte as bridesmaid and F Menzel as best man. The couple will reside at 264 Thirteenth street with both families present for a wedding repast. The bride is the eldest Nolte daughter and a shoe dealer’s daughter from 28 South Main Street. The groom is an engineer with the Chicago and Northwestern railroad.
The list of witnesses prepared by Chairman Lemly and transmitted to Admiral Schley names many flag and subordinate officers. Admiral Sampson heads the roster with captains from ships in the Santiago campaign, excluding Oregon’s Clarke and Texas’s Philip who have died.
The ceremony took place at 4 pm this afternoon at St Peter’s Catholic church par sonage. Miss Katherine M Doyle daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Doyle of 3120 Mt Vernon street married Alfred C DeSmidt of Minneapolis. Rev James O Malley officiated. The bride wore a white gown and roses. Attendants were Milas Meta DeSmidt of Sheboygan and Robert Doyle Jr. The reception followed at the bride’s home with a four course luncheon for about 25 relatives and friends. The couple will reside in Minneapolis on Nicolet avenue. Mr DeSmidt is a traveling salesman for Slocum Bergen Co. The bride, Oshkosh native, taught in Sheboygan. Out-of-town guests were Mr and Mrs J DeSmidt and Miss Meta DeSmidt of Sheboygan.
Surgeon Joan Urie stationed at the U S marine recruiting office in Boston travels to Buckfield Maine for a fort night visit to Secretary of the Navy John D Long. Officials say the illness is a minor recurrence of a chronic stomach trouble.
