Assassination of U S Vice Consul in Beirut

Washington Aug 27 United States vice consul William Magelssen at Beirut Syria was assassinated while riding in a carriage. The State Department demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits and possible indemnity for the family. European squadron ordered to Beirut if Turkey fails to act. Magelssen, a Minnesota appointee, was a Scandinavian born in Fillmore county.

Senator Sarau Funeral Held After Streetcar Death

The funeral for late State Senator Sarau, killed by an electric streetcar, was held this afternoon at two in the Masonic temple with Rev. Edward H. Smith officiating. A large attendance, Masonic rites, and a Congregational quartet accompanied by Clarence Shepard marked the service. The casket, similar to President McKinley’s, was surrounded by elaborate floral tributes from state officials, the public, and out-of-town guests including Senator Krustzer, Senator Rogers, Senator Green, ex Senator Devore, Senator Wippermen, Senator Hatton, Senator Morse, Lieutenant Governor Davidson, State Treasurer Kemp, and Assistant Attorney General Tucker.

Mrs. Mary Levin wife of Richard Levin a stone mason of 433 East Franklin Neenah was instantly killed at 11 this morning when struck by a northbound Chicago & Northwestern train at Cherry street intersection.
