British Ambassador in China Shot by Japanese Plane
British ambassador Sir Hugh Knatchbull Hugessen was shot in Shanghai while en route to an emergency meeting with British officials. The weaponry injury touched the spine with loss of blood prompting blood transfusions from two U.S. Marines. Japanese authorities apologized, saying the pilot mistook the vehicle for one carrying Chinese officers. A Japanese naval bombardment also reportedly hit the Poplar dairy and a Chinese survey vessel was sunk.
