Dispatches from Vienna and Berlin report a three day Krasnik clash ending in a decisive Austrian victory. Russians are falling back toward Lublin as German and Austrian forces suffer heavy losses in the Drina engagement and Antwerp protest over Zeppelin attacks grows.
London reports little front news as allied forces pull back to French frontier. British casualties estimated at 2000, sparking recruitment drives and patriotic resolve. Belgium seeks to document German atrocities while Asquith defends military service and supports Belgium’s independence. French attacks and German movements across Alsace and Prussia are tracked with cautious official statements.
The German navy press bureau in New York accuses England of prior binding with France and Russia. It defends Germany as civilizational against Russia, cites Polish and Slavic uprisings, German treatment abroad, and asserts Liege’s fall as a major historic victory. It claims Alsace loss and Belgian neutrality violated by France and Belgian surveillance.
An arvenant from Novoe Vremya recounts a memorable cavalry charge by Russian Guard at Gumbinnen during recent fighting. A German battery mowed down a Russian squadron, a second squadron fell back, then a third unit attacked from the flank, sabers routing the Germans who fled in panic. One squadron reportedly cut down seventy Germans without a scratch.
Ketchikan Alaska August reports the British seizure of a coal freight aboard the Canadian Pacific freighter Firineeas Ena bound for Northland Dock Co. in Ketchikan. The fuel was seized near Prince Rupert while the German cruiser Leipzig patrolled Dixon Entrance within sixty miles. The British hospital ship Prince George, initially denied fuel, later received 250 barrels to reach Prince Farmport.
Special to The Northwestern Appleton Wisconsin August 26. German residents will meet to choose the first on the local reserve list to return to Germany. Michael Volti and Max Zachenr received letters from Hamburg American line agent in New York about direct routes to Rotterdam. Two men may depart immediately to defend the colors. Those chosen to stay will pledge to support families and property of those who return to fight, selecting men best suited for war service.

The Pleiades of Luckenbach steamship company completed the first all water voyage from San Francisco to New York via the Panama Canal. The vessel, sailing under the American flag, left San Francisco on July 24 and passed through the canal on August 16.
An eastbound auto collided with a northbound street car at the South Park and Oregon corner last evening, tearing the trailer from the car and sending the street car onto the curb. No injuries were reported. the wreck halted Oregon Streetcar line operations for about 30 minutes while crews cleared the scene.
Lieutenant Rambert sustains injuries to fingers with fear of losing part of a finger after a chain snapped while an engine was hauled from Luts stone quarry. Fred W Lambert of No 3 fire company suffered a crushed hand and broken fingers. others present included Lieut Charles Wood and Robert Luts.
Election reports from San Francisco detail Heney securing the Progressive nomination for United States senator with Francis J. Heney and James P. Phelan winning Democratic nominations. John D. Frederick remains to oppose Hiram W. Johnson in the governor’s race, while Knowland leads over Shortridge for the Republican senatorial nomination. In Michigan, Chase Osborn leads the GOP gubernatorial field as Detroit slows tallying and Mayor Marx appears renominated. Missouri Republicans adopt a platform backing tariff reform, child labor laws, workmen’s comp, and city home rule. Ohio Republicans firm on liquor restrictions. New York Democrats endorse national and state administrations with reform planks but avoid a direct suffrage declaration.
The German Methodist Episcopal conference of the Chicago district begins at 7:20 PM with Bishop William F. McDowell. Rev L Menzner of Wausau preaches, followed by sessions and addresses by L Lesemann of Chicago and others. The gathering continues Sunday with sermons by the bishop and remarks from Joseph Meck.
Associated Press reports a Berlin wireless message stating an English cavalry brigade was repulsed at Meubeuge and an English infantry division routed with many taken as prisoners. A French official note claims the French offensive on the Belgian and Lorraine frontier has been ruined.
