Gemini 5 astronauts extend eight day mission in space

Space center Houston AP reports Gemini 5 pilots warmed from chilly suits to continue their world record eight day mission. Conrad and Cooper logged 46 orbits at 10 12 am CDT as Texas ground fires aided navigation. Cooper set American space time record with 98 hours in space across two years.

Dormitories Approved at La Crosse State University

MADISON AP Gov. Knowles approved 2,668,492 in contracts Monday for construction of three dormitories at La Crosse State University. The general contractor is Orville E. Madsen & Son Inc, Minneapolis.

Trial Set In Montello Slaying Case

Three migrant workers face trial September 27 on first degree murder charges in the slaying of 20 year old Peter Stewart of Montello. Rogelio Buhat 29 of Phoenix changed his plea to innocent after consulting a UW interpreter. Ricardo Pastor 20 of San Francisco and Edwardo Saya 23 of El Paso entered innocent pleas at arraignment before Circuit Judge Robert Gollmar.

B52s Strike Enemy Again Near Da Nang

US Strategic Air Command B52 bombers hit a Viet Cong installation 55 miles south of Da Nang in Quang Tin Province. The number of planes and bombs were not disclosed under new security rules. Separately, Viet Cong mortared Bien Hoa air base near Saigon, damaging 45 aircraft. no deaths, four helicopters reportedly lost earlier, and a sweep began southwest of the base with two suspects captured.

Fifty eight U S servicemen, mostly Marines, aboard a C130 Hercules were feared dead after a Hong Kong harbor crash shortly after takeoff for Da Nang and Saigon. Only 18 survivors confirmed, with at least 20 believed still inside the wreckage. Divers recovered bodies, barge workers pulled seven from the water, and survivors were treated for shock burns and fractures at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kowloon.

PITTSBURGH AP An apparent deadlock in steel contract talks persists with eight days left before USW strike rights activate. Union and 10 major steel firms have met 144 hours, both sides sticking to bargaining positions. The USW could call 450,000 members out on Sept 1 if no deal is reached.

Senate Passes Public Works Bill in Senate Vote

Washington AP reports the Senate approved a $4.3 billion public works appropriation by voice vote, rejecting two Wisconsin amendments. Proxmire’s bid to delete $10 million and halt the Cross-Florida Barge Canal failed, while Nelson’s effort to remove $10 million for the Westlands Irrigation District was defeated 24 to 50.
