A American merchant ship the Baton Rouge Victory carrying war supplies was struck by a Communist mine in the Saigon River and sank with seven crewmen dead. The 7,601 ton vessel flooded the engine room and blocked one of Saigon’s two main shipping lanes.
A Wisconsin girl, Leslie L Bohkmann 18 of Menomonee Falls, died in a three car crash near Stanhope Iowa Monday. Mrs Florence 66 and her daughter Jacqueline Hill 2 of Stanhope were injured when Bohkmanns car collided with Miss Hills car and was struck by a third car.
An elderly peasant recalls Friday's quake in Varto Turkey that destroyed the town in seconds. Witnesses described horizons tilting the ground then collapsing mud huts and concrete buildings. The epicenter reportedly left about 3 000 dead in eastern Turkey.
DETROIT AP The United Auto Workers indicate it will not accept the Big Three rejection of contract reopening for wage boosts to skilled workers. GM Ford Chrysler refused immediate 50 cent raise, citing upcoming automatic raises under 1964 contracts. The union says tradesmen are underpaid versus similar skilled workers elsewhere and has staged protests amid recent plant shutdowns.
The two deaths push the state road toll for the year to 663, up from 611 the previous year on Aug. 23. Catherine Chase, 18, of St. Paul, Minnesota, was killed when her car overturned on Highway 35 near Osceola in Polk County, with two others hospitalized. Evelyn Edwards, a Chicago mother of six, died in a Stambaugh hospital from injuries from a two-car crash near Eagle River, with ten others injured.
A church roof collapsed during a revival service in Plainview Texas killing a woman and injuring 53 others. Gas leak suspected after an explosion blew the ceiling away as the United Baptist choir sang. Rescuers, cranes, and ambulances aided victims while authorities investigated likely gas ignition.

The British navy aircraft carrier HM S Eagle arrived at Devonport England after 363 days at sea. Of her 2750 crew, 57 men and women decided to marry during the voyage.
Coast Guard searches near the Peshtigo River mouth after two teen passengers were found dead from a sunken 17 foot cruiser that carried five from Marinette to Chambers Island. Missing are Walter Laundree 40 Milwaukee Walter and two others, last seen Saturday.
Secretary McNamara announced Pentagon plans to train 40 000 men disabled by education or health in the next 16 months, rising to 100 000 in the next fiscal year. The program uses the Defense Department facilities as the largest educational complex, with about 85 percent expected to qualify for military duty. Nixon warned five more years of combat in Vietnam unless war effort increases, linking poverty to national unity concerns.
A blue ribbon advisory committee urged Wisconsin to set annual salaries for state senators and assemblymen at 8400 with seven leadership positions higher and Speaker at 10080. The panel also proposed raising daily expense allowances to 20 and holding an August 31 public hearing. It favored annual sessions, a biennial budget, and a one month to six week start recess.
New York AP Secretary of State Dean Rusk says he is living on salary and will quit when the balance reaches zero. He notes he has no other funds and savings are exhausted on the job. Rusk’s annual pay is 85,000 and he earned an estimated 50,000 to 75,000 at the Rockefeller Foundation.
Washington AP The Viet Nam war is costing President Johnson some of his political popularity, said Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen. He labeled Johnson’s Northeastern swing as long on rhetoric and short on results, noting polls show a drop in Johnson’s standing amid Vietnam frustrations. Nixon and Fulbright weighed in on war policy, with Nixon urging increased offensive actions and Fulbright opposing policy, as continued debate promises further political effects.
