In New York six jurors were seated as lawyers resume selecting the twelve to decide if seventeen year old Paul Geldel killed William Henry Jackson, an aged broker, at Hotel Iroquois on July 26. Geldel sits with his mother aiding counsel during the trial.
Cass Lake Minnesota August 22 one hundred ten men and women waited for the land opening. The area to be opened will yield about 500 tracts of 160 acres each. Arthur Roberts of Sterling Iowa holds second place. People line up from central western states and most of the eastern states.
Carpenter & Fors of Milwaukee filed formal application to test the constitutionality of Wisconsin income tax law. The suit seeks to enjoin the secretary of state and state treasurer from certifying salaries of the state tax commissioners and Kennan, chief of the income tax bureau, until the constitutionality is decided, and contests Kennan’s appointment as invalid.
Indianapolis August 22. Thousands of members of the Colored Knights of Pythias gathered at the state fair grounds for the supreme lodge sessions and the Uniform Rank encampment. Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee Institute will speak at the Coliseum tonight and a reception for him is planned later today.
Memphis August 22 reports from ten crafts including Illinois Central Railway workers say counting of the strike vote will finish tonight. Leaders believe a strike will not be called soon.
The extraordinary session closes at 3:02 PM with a veto of the cotton tariff revision. Congress to adjourn at once after notifying the president, while Vice President Sherman and Speaker Clark plan their departures. Taft cites lack of study on the cotton bill and cabinet talks conclude after a long White House meeting.

In Columbus a conference with Attorney General Hogan and County Prosecutor Turner discussed Rodney Diegle former senate sergeant at arms and a bribery conviction. Diegle vows full confession detailing alleged graft in the last assembly and promises to reveal secondhand information. He faces mercy in common pleas court and potential talks with lobbyists as he prepares a life confession for September. A capias re arrest followed rumors he received money. Judges also fined the Cleveland leader for contempt of court over indications in indictments.
Paris dispatch reports Premier Caillaux seeking counsel amid Moroccan negotiations with Germany. French ambassadors to Berlin Jules Cambon Paul Cambon and Gaile Barrere were summoned to Paris and met with Caillaux and top ministers including Justin de Selves Jean Crupps and Theophile Delcasse preparing for a cabinet session set for the week’s end.
Officials at the international aviation meet released a revised barograph reading for Lincoln Beachey's Sunday flight. The corrected altitude is 11,642 feet, down from the earlier unofficial 11,878 feet. Felix de Lamartine reportedly held the previous record at 11,140 feet at Etamps, France on August 6.
Syracuse Aug 22 Harry N Atwood continued his solo flight from St Louis toward New York aiming to cover 153 miles to Albany in one day He warned Albany might be reached by night or the leg could extend to another stop depending on weather and fuel and progress.
At a noon session the House passed a resolution extending regulations governing water rights at Niagara Falls. The chamber also refused an extra month’s pay to congressional employees for the extra session, with final adjournment at 3 02 p m.

Chesterfield Court House Va Aug 23 Sheriff summons thirty county residents for possible Beattie jury duty as four of twelve jurors remain subject to defense challenges. Beattie Jr stays jailed in Richmond while defense plans call for twenty nine witnesses including five women to challenge the defendant's account of the murder.
San Francisco August 22 delegates of the Fraternal Order of Eagles discuss candidates for grand president with William J Brennan of Pittsburg Frank Ns Sperring of South Bend Indiana named as possibles. J J Cusick of San Francisco is considered but lacks wide support. The grand aerie opens with M S Parry of San Francisco acting as grand president and credentials issued to about a thousand delegates.
Washington DC August 22 The senate held an executive session to address the unconfirmed nomination of John Tiddle of North Carolina as collector of customs for the Pamlico district. Senator Nelson stated the prior confirmation had occurred without proper report from the commerce committee and the matter was postponed to the next session.
The body of John W. Gates arrived in New York on the steamship Kabeee Wilhelm Der Grosse from Paris. His widow Mia Gates and son Charles G Gates accompanied the body. Funeral services are planned for tomorrow morning at Motel Plaza.
The pope’s condition remains satisfactory as of morning reports. He walked briefly in the Vatican gardens without fatigue, signaling gradual improvement.
