French paratroopers fought with hundreds of Tunisians around the Bizerte barricades as demonstrations against occupation continued. The Tunisian government radio reported bloodshed while officials pressed for peaceful protest, and Tunisian and French forces fortified the city amid tensions.
Judge Learned Hand died at age 89 in New York. He shaped American law for five decades on the federal bench and was praised as a towering figure akin to Holmes and Marshall despite never serving on the Supreme Court.
Cape Canaveral reports an eight foot Atlas missile ready for a preliminary test to launch a unmanned Project Mercury capsule into orbit before year end. A battle group of the 8th Infantry Division left Mannheim to reinforce West Berlin under Kennedy orders. The 1,500 soldiers carried full gear and traveled 400 miles by truck to cross into East German territory and reach Berlin Sunday. Vice President Johnson arrived to reinforce U S resolve, expressing determination to meet obligations.
The Wisconsin highway toll rose to 526 with two more deaths. Mrs Viela Rommell, 32, of Lewis Polk County, died in a collision between a car and a Unity High School football team bus near Milltown. Charles Wischmann 61 died in a collision near Wisconsin Dells involving two cars.
Britain joins the United States in bolstering the West Berlin garrison. A railway shipment of 18 armored personnel carriers and 16 scout cars is sent from a British base in West Germany through East Germany to arrive in West Berlin later today. No extra British troops are planned for Berlin at this time.
The House rejected Kennedy’s five year borrowing authority as it approved a one year $4.3 billion foreign aid bill 287 140. Senate passed $4.1 billion version keeping the five year option at $8 billion down from $8.8 but negotiators in conference aim for a compromise likely between one and five years. Speaker Rayburn notes possible linked food bill.
Lucille Adams, 34, a Milwaukee housekeeper, told prosecutors she pressed Donald Craig 4 and Ronald Craig 2 to her left shoulder and suffocated them after hearing a radio story. She was charged with first degree murder as the couple’s separation hurt their marriage.
A USAF B 1 bomber from Davis-Monathan Air Force Base crashed seven miles south and three miles east of Hasty Colorado near the John Martin reservoir. One crewman was killed, two survived after ejecting and were in a Lamar hospital. Names withheld until next of kin notified.
