Babson Park Mass special report notes August business is 10 percent above a year ago and at a 10 year August peak except 1936 1937. It highlights 200+ companies' profits rising 80 percent in first half of 1939 versus 1938, wage gains, higher dividends, and broader benefits across investors, workers, and farmers as costs drop and raw materials stay cheap.

An order determining the inheritance tax for Ferdinand Friedrich's estate lists a net market value of 11 665.38 with distributive shares to Marguerite Fraedrich Waller Fraedrich and Dorothea Fraedrich at 3590 each Dornothea Fraedrich. A hearing notice shows another estate for distribution at Neenah totaling 8045.51 mostly to sister Mrs. Lucetta Moore. A separate petition for Zilpha B Plummer of Neenah lists an estate around 7000 mainly personal property.
District Judge T A Bearmore ordered Elmer K Spengler of Milwaukee to pay his 19 year old daughter Betty Lou Spengler forty dollars. The ruling came in Mason City.
Judge Bearmore orders the father to provide monthly room and board with clothing until the girl reaches 21, plus $250 for tuition if she attends school. D. H. Fitzpatrick of Mason City is named trustee. Spangler and Nellie B. Spangler, now in Los Angeles, were divorced in 1920.
The Illinois Industrial Council will host a Wisconsin and Illinois leaders conference at Green Lake Wisconsin August 24 25. Governor Julius P Heil of Wisconsin will open with Partners Men and Management. Speakers include thirteen industrial executives and Burrus Dickinson president Eureka College Eureka Illinois to discuss legislation and public relations in industrial problems.
Milwaukee magician Gordon Bathke 28 asked Chicago police to search for a man in a tall silk hat from which rabbits doves or $100 could be pulled. Bathke reported his hat containing $100 and a dress suit stolen from his parked car last night.
Portsmouth New York reports the United States submarine Squalus and 26 dead men were near home after a successful second lifting and towing operation. Salvors raised the 4 million dollar vessel from 160 feet deep and towed it to 90 feet of water then five miles offshore. They hope to surface soon and tow to Portsmouth yard for drydock, the first homecoming since the disaster on May 23 off the port. Thirty three survivors were rescued.
Springfield Illinois Governor Horner predicted the state supreme court would sustain his veto of the $40 minimum old age pension bill. He said the veto was written more than 10 days after the legislature adjourned on June 30 and released the statement through his office.
Cross urges court review of governor veto on a pension bill raising old age assistance from 30 to 40 dollars per month. He argues the constitution requires gubernatorial action within the session. The governor favors awaiting a supreme court ruling on the veto’s validity.
