Two Second Army flyers William W. Harding of Los Angeles and private Francis Maier were killed when their pursuit ship caught fire during a power dive near Otsego Michigan. Witnesses said one parachute failed to open and the other delayed too long before using the rip cord. Bodies fell on the McGree farm. It was the first fatality in the army maneuvers involving 24 000 troops.
