Burlington Taxicab Driver Death Investigated

Coroner FE B Yanny of Racine county today investigated the death of 36 year old Chicago taxi driver For rest G Schonk. His body was found near the Soo Line railroad tracks about eleven miles from Burlington. A note and about $1 500 in savings certificates and cash were found on the body. Relatives visited, body to be identified, and investigators planned further Illinois Chicago trip.

Buckstaff Observatory Records 101 Degree Day

Mercury reached a season high of 101 degrees at Buckstaff observatory north of the city this afternoon at 2 o clock. The previous summer peak was 97 on August six while the all time record of 107 set on July thirteen, 1936 remains distant. Sunday's high was 96 and Saturday reached 95.

Battle rages as Franco forces push toward Reinosa

Franco's troops in a fierce house to house battle moved toward Reinosa in northern Santander as government troops retreated firing heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Budget cuts in 1938 appropriations bill limit federal programs

The House Appropriations Committee reduced budget estimates by 42.9 million and backed a 78.5 million third deficiency bill for the 1938 fiscal year. Major actions include a 70 million three year program for federal buildings, increased funding for the National Labor Relations Board, and allocations for the New York World's Fair and Golden Gate Exposition. Denials cover naval building, farm forestry acts, and farm tenancy. Also approved are funds for the Jefferson Memorial and Grand Central post office purchase.

Chief Judge Rules Against Merger Of Big Holding Firms

Baltimore. Chief Judge Samuel K. Dennis forbade a merger of Alleghany and Chesapeate Corporations, key holding firms of the Van Sweringen railway system.
